What is it about local elections that inspires one to make weird animations?

What is it about local elections that inspires one to make weird animations? It’s not a sense of civic duty, that’s for sure; there exists no activity known to man that produces a lower ratio of man-votes to man-hours. And it’s not the glory either; there exists no known video genre that holds a viewer’s attention more fleetingly. Nor is it the players themselves. Sure we’ve got some local weirdos, but they deserve to be ignored, not immortalized.

It seems then that the reason a man creates animations of mayoral candidates bleeping their way through a Nintendo soundtrack, or of a rolled up piece of paper being hounded by an unseen citizen journalist, is that there is no reason. By creating something so whimsical, so pointless, the creator declares to the world “I exist! But I might as well not.”

In order to show off the new site’s versatility, we proudly present a frivolous one panel comic. Behold, this is an art form which had heretofore been declared impossible to recreate on the web.

Unfortunately, in addition to answering theoretical questions about your browser’s ability to render image tags, this post also raises equally pressing questions regarding the nature of shark-based sports.

For instance why are there so few sharks in the box? The prevailing opinion in human football* is that you should bring all of your players back on defense for a corner kick. Presumably the same strategy should apply for sharks since it’s based entirely on the relatively high cost of allowing a goal, and not on any species specific pack behavior.

Perhaps this panel is taken from a casual six on six coed league. But if so, that only poses more questions such as: Do sharks have the same difficulties that humans have in getting enough women on their coed teams? Or, since female sharks are larger, is it the other way around? Wouldn’t that be weird?

We welcome your opinions in the comments.

* For the purpose of scientific discussion we are using the metric system.

As many of you are probably aware, Seattle Untimely was selected to be featured on Bravo’s Extreme Website Makeover. That was almost two years ago. There was a lot of infighting, and we had to wade through a mile of red tape to get approved by the Web 2.0 Standards board, but the site is finally fully pimped. Of course that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. The nature of those shows is that they only care about making the exterior look like a gussied-up geocities page, regardless of what bastardizations they have to make to the underlying chassis (it takes thirty-two database calls to render those serrated edges). Anyway, you should watch the episode this Fall. They really make us look like jerks!

Anyway, the biggest change is that we will now be able to post non-video content on the site (for example this post). The hope is that our lack of creative motivation will take this as an acceptable compromise and start producing half-assed comedy again. We’ll see. For the video purists out there, we have included a link in the header that will filter out all of this fancy new ‘text’ based stuff.

surfs up,

Last week Seattle congressman Jim McDermott’s scheduling secretary, Elizabeth Becton, flogged a lobbyist with nineteen blistering emails, all because he called her Liz. When these emails were published, many dismissed it as an ‘exceptional psychofit’ from ‘an hysterical psychobitch’. To us, this conclusion seemed unconsidered and unjust. As this cartoon illustrates, even the most logical sentient being, equipped with a MALE voice synthesizer, can be set off by an unflattering nickname.

Read original Liz Becton email exchange here.

This episode represents our second experiment with kinetic typography. After the lukewarm response to the P-I word jumble, we decided to spice things up with some simple illustrations. This enhancement, predictably, made the video the hottest thing on the web.

Actually, the stratospheric popularity of this video was somewhat surprising. After all, we had chosen a parody subject that was too minor to have national interest, too remote to have local interest, too frivolous to be good political satire, and too political to be good gossip. Nor was it released in time to benefit from the 2001 Space Odyssey spoof boom of 2007.

It just goes to show how much promise this format has. It’s like a web comic, but without the burden of being able to read at your own pace. And any amount of cadence or inflection added by the animation is beautifully neutralized by a choppy video stream. Needless to say : patent pending.
